Welcome to the wacky world of drain flies! These little insects may be small, but boy, can they cause a big headache.
But Ballard is here to guide you through identifying and fixing a drain fly problem. So grab your bug spray, and let’s dive in!
Step 1: Identify the culprits
First things first, you’ve got to determine if you’re dealing with drain flies or some other type of pesky bug. Drain flies are tiny, slightly furry insects hanging around your drains and pipes. They may seem harmless, but their larvae can cause quite a stir. Speaking of which…
Step 2: Look for the larvae
Drain fly larvae are gross and slimy and thrive in the moist, organic buildup inside your pipes. To find them, grab a flashlight and take a peek inside your drain. If you see any small, worm-like creatures wriggling around, you’ve got yourself a full-blown drain fly infestation.
Step 3: Clean those drains
Now that you know what you’re dealing with, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. The best way to eliminate drain flies is to eliminate their breeding grounds, which means cleaning out all that gunk in your pipes. A wire brush can work wonders here, and you could also try pouring a pot of boiling water down the drain, but avoid chemical drain cleaners because if the problem causing the drain flies is a clog of organic matter, the drain cleaner could get stuck and eat your pipes!!
Step 4: Prevention is key
Congratulations, you’ve successfully rid your pipes of those pesky drain flies! But the work doesn’t end there. To prevent them from coming back, it’s important to keep your drains clean and dry. This means wiping up any standing water around your sinks or shower stalls and avoiding pouring grease or oil down the drain.
